In the month of September, I had gone on a 5 day vacation to Switzerland with my husband.
One amongst our destination was Rhine Falls. As the name suggests, it is located on the Rhine river.Rhine Falls is the largest plain waterfall in Europe. The fall is 150 metres wide and 23 metres high. It’s beauty is spell bounding.
Rhine Falls is accessible by car, bicycle or Pubic transport. While using the public transport Rhein Fall is accesible through the Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall train stations.
We had done a day trip to Rhine Falls from Lucerne (Luzern) in Switzerland. We had travelled by the Swiss Rail
Our route was:
Luzern —-> Zürich ——> Schaffhausen —–> Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall.
It takes just 1-2 minutes to reach the ticket counter from scloss laufen station.
For the northern bank from Neuhausen am Rheinfall or Schaffhausen, there is not entry fees. But for entry from the southern part of the fall i.e.the Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall side, the entry fees is CHF 5.00 per person for adults. For children between the age of 3 and 16 years, the entry fees is CHF 3.50.
The fee is nothing compared to the experience that one gets at the falls. The water at the fall looks as white as milk. It has a beautiful mist around it. It’s actually beauty beyond words. I’ll still try my best to decscribe its beauty. There are various viewing platforms at different levels of the fall. These are accessible from the Schloss Laufen side. These viewing platforms are very near to the falls. Standing there and watching the falls is a very awesome experience. Some of these platforms are so near to the falls, it feels that even with meter of deflection we can very well drown standing there. It’s of course not dangerous. It’s just an imagination but it is very thrilling. At some platforms, showers from the fall will come on you. it’s a very refreshing experience.

The rainbow of Rhine Falls is very famous. If it’s sunny, then at the mouth of the fall a beautiful rainbow is formed. It was a beautiful experience. I had only seen glimpses of rainbows before. I was lucky enough to see a whole rainbow in front of me.
The paths to the various viewing platforms are made narrow steps. Its like miniest of treks but picturesque at every step. The Rhine falls look beautiful from every angle.
At one of these viewing platforms you can also take a boat ride to the falls. It’s a round trip boat ride which takes you till the mouth of the fall. It’s a must take trip. Just at the mouth the fall looks magnificent.
There is also a provision to see the falls from the side not facing the wall. There is a Railway bridge over Rhine river. It is accessible on foot as well. Though the greatness of the fall is visible from the other side but the serenity in spirit is visible from the Railway bridge.

There are various food joints near the falls. I know only about the Schloss laufen side. If you want to relax enjoy the view of the fall while eating, there is a beautiful restaurant to cater to your needs. It opens at around 12 noon. If you are in a hurry and want to grab a quick bite, there is a Snack Bistro on the Shloss Laufen side near the ticket counter. I guess it opens at around 7:30 in the morning. There are also various food trucks, which started operating at about 11:00 am. For those of you who like Indian food, there is also an Indian food truck.
Near the ticket counter there is also a Souvenir shop. One can buy magnets, swiss bells, swiss watches and swiss knifes and what not at these shops.
Once you have seen the magnificent falls, you are fed and watered, the icing on the cake is taking a walk to the Neuhausen am Rheinfall station if going back by swiss rail. It is advisable to take a return train from Neuhausen instead of Schloss laufen. The walk to the station is around 20 minutes. It’s such a peaceful walk that you will lose yourself in the beauty of the nature. The calm blue water of the Rhine river is a welcome contrast to the white mystic fall.
