Homemade Chocolate Granola Cereal

A healthy homemade granola cereal recipe is an ideal option for a healthy start of the day.We all love granola for breakfast. Be it homemade granola cereal or homemade granola bars, they are a healthy breakfast option as well as a healthy snack option.  Apart from being healthy, it’s also very filling and quick and easy to stir up; thereby making it a perfect breakfast option for the busy mornings we all have.

My healthy homemade granola cereal recipe is easy to make and can be stored for many days. I have used ingredients as per my taste. You can change them accordingly to satisfy your taste buds.

Why should you make Granola at Home?

The store-bought granola is high in sugar. It also contains a lot of unhealthy fats and preservatives. The store bought granola also contains a lot of other ingredients along with oats and nuts which are not healthy.

By making your own granola recipe at home, you can regulate the amount of sugar and fats in the cereal. You can also add healthier ingredients to your cereal

The best part about a homemade granola cereal recipe is that you can customize the recipe according to your taste and nutritional needs. You can add whatever you want and it will still be very tasty J

Personally, I think homemade granola cereal tastes way better than the readymade one.

Why should you eat Homemade Granola Cereal for Breakfast?

Breakfast is the first and the most important meal of the day. Hence, it is necessary to make it as nutritional as possible. A combination of homemade granola cereal with fruits and yogurt/milk is perfect breakfast to kick start the day.

A granola made with oats, nuts, and dry fruits provides all the important vitamins and minerals. It’s also high in fiber and will keep your tummy filled for a few hours. Like oats, the wheat germ is also high in fiber. It is also a good source of proteins and important vitamins. The nuts also provide additional proteins and healthy fats, which keep you energetic throughout the day.

Ingredients for my Homemade Granola Cereal Recipe

Whole rolled oats – 3 ½ cups

Wheat Germ – 1 cup

Raw Sunflower Seeds – ¼ cup

Unsweetened dried fruits (chopped) –  1 Cup

(I have used a combination of dried apricots, blueberries, raspberries and prunes)

Nuts (chopped) –  ½ cup

(I mostly use almonds and walnuts)

Dark Chocolate (grated/chopped) – 150 grams

(I usually use Lindt dark chocolate bars with 80% cocoa content)

Coconut oil/ other cooking oil – 2 tablespoon

Honey/ Maple Syrup – 3-4 tablespoon

Salt – 2 pinch

Steps  – How to make Chocolate Granola at home

1.Pre-heat the oven to 170 C

2.Mix the oats, wheat germ, dried fruits, nuts, oil, chocolate, honey, and salt together. If you are using coconut oil, and it is solid; you might have to melt it a little bit before adding it to the other ingredients, so that it mixes evenly. The best way is to mix everything with your hands.

3.Line a baking tray with baking paper and spread the mixture evenly.

4.Bake at 170 C for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes stir the mixture and bake for a further 10-12 minutes.

5.Let the granola mixture cool.

How to Store Homemade Granola Cereal

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to cool the homemade chocolate granola completely before storing it. I prefer keeping mine for at least 5-6 hours before storing it. Just to be doubly sure that it’s completely dry.

You can store it in airtight containers or mason jars. Mine lasts for about 20 days without refrigeration. While traveling, you can take it in plastic Ziploc bags. Recently I had taken my homemade chocolate granola to Santorini in a Ziploc bag and It lasted for about  10 days without refrigeration

If even after 2 weeks you are left with some granola cereal, it is advisable to keep it in the fridge

How to eat your homemade chocolate granola cereal

The best way to eat granola is either with yogurt or milk.

You can layer yogurt and granola alternately in a glass or a bowl. It tastes even better if you add fresh fruits. You can read my oats and yogurt with strawberries recipe here

You can also eat the cereal with any type of milk to your choice. I don’t like the regular milk. So I have it with almond milk and fresh fruits.

You can also eat this homemade granola cereal as a snack- without any accompaniments.

I can guarantee you that either way it tastes delicious.

Changes you can make to Homemade Granola Cereal Recipe

  1. You can use only whole oats if you don’t like wheat germ. Some people also add puffed rice or cornflakes to add an extra crunch to the cereal.
  2. You can skip adding chocolate as well. I love chocolate flavor and that is why I make chocolate granola at home. Instead of chocolate, you can add vanilla essence for flavoring.

  3. You can use any nuts of your choice. I usually use almonds and walnuts because I love these two. But, pistachios and pecan nuts are also good options.

  4. Make sure to add only unsweetened dried fruits. The sweetened ones contain too much sugar. I usually make dried fruit at home in the oven. I also use prunes as they are a very good remedy for constipation

  5. If you want you can make the granola cereal completely sugar free.  You can add dates and add more of dried and fresh fruits.

Conclusion:

My homemade granola recipe is my go-to breakfast recipe. It’s a favorite in my family and the best part is that I can carry it along while traveling. Whenever I eat this for breakfast I feel energetic throughout the day.

Great recipe. I am all about eating healthy this year and breakfast is the most important meal of my day. i am definitely going to try out this recipe.

annaszoke · January 6, 2018 at 9:53 pm

Your recipe was exactly what I was looking for. We eat granola and cereals every morning, and I was just shocked by how much waste (packaging) we made with it. Since one of my resolutions for this year were to create less waste at home, I decided that I’ll buy the ingredients in bulk and make the granola myself (then there is no unneccessary packaging to throw away). Your recipe sounds amazing, I’ll try it tomorrow!

Rachel · January 28, 2018 at 2:43 pm

So delicious! I like to eat my granola with yogurt, but I will try it as cereal as you suggested next time!

    Prajakta Pendharkar · January 31, 2018 at 8:31 am

I am glad you liked the recipe… do let me know how you liked it as cereal 🙂
