When I think of an apple pie recipe, it’s like thinking about comfort food. The best part about an apple pie recipe is that with minimalistic ingredients one can prepare an amazing dish. This particular apple pie recipe is all the more exciting as it uses leftover dough of any kind that goes well with apples. I have tried making this pie using pizza dough, readymade pastry dough and chapatti/paratha(Indian bread) dough for the base

For Indians, Diwali is a huge event. We make a great variety of snacks and almost all times something or the other is left over. I like experimenting with the leftover ingredients to make something new or innovative.  As Diwali was around the corner I had some leftover Gujiya/Karanji (India Snack) dough. So this time I tried using this dough for making the pie base and it turned out amazing. So here I am sharing the recipe with you.

Ingredients for my Apple Pie Recipe

I had around 250 gms of leftover gujiya dough and I used the standard 6 inch round baking dish and all the measurements are taken accordingly

Gujiya Dough – 250 gms

Apples – 2 (large)

Wheat Flour- ¾ cup

White/brown sugar (whichever is available) – ½ cup

Butter – 11/2 tbsp

Ground Cinnamon – 2 tsp

Lemon juice – 1 ½ tsp – Use lemon juice only if the apples are not tangy in taste

Method

  1. Roll the gujiya dough and line it in the baking dish.

  2. Bake the dough for about 10 minutes at 180C. No need to pre-heat the oven.

  3. Mix flour, sugar, ground cinnamon and butter in a bowl and mix evenly. Make sure that there are no lumps in the mix.

  4. Peel and roughly dice the apples and mix them with the flour mix.

  5. Evenly spread the apple stuffing on the pie base and bake for about 45-50 minutes.

This apple pie recipe goes well with Vanilla ice-cream.

Some Useful Information

  1. The pie filling goes well with pizza dough, puff pastry dough, and paratha dough as well.

  2. In order to make it more nutritious, multigrain flour can also be used to make the pie base. Replacing white sugar with brown sugar and butter with ghee (clarified butter) are also viable options.

  3. Don’t use castor sugar for the pie. Granulated sugar is an important ingredient for the crunch in the flour crumble in this apple pie recipe
